Aufrechte Haltung schwebend, zweigeteilt, dazu Erase yourself: thank you Germany, you stop me from dreaming.

Eick Hoemann, Oktober 2022

How did European artists experience the reality of a time of great social upheaval resulting from the Corona-Covid pandemic? In view of the escalating crises, what utopias, also dystopias, have they designed for themselves, for

the world?

For 15 months, the online gallery panremis.de has grown as a social sculpture with monthly changing exhibitions. With the work of the exhibitors, the curator and the public discourses at the zoom vernissages. Together they give an idea of a different future, hopefully less catastrophic socially and ecologically: concepts of alternative urban planning, thought of by the needs of the local people. Alternative power plants for Frankfurt and the surrounding area, images of paradise, the unmasking of big words in big speeches, the unweaving of thoughts. Claimed marble table with night cat in front of the window. Poetic tenths of a second experimental films and couple dance in the countryside. A Bundestag campaign spot with agave syrup and a ten-year plan. Upright posture floating, divided into two, plus Erase yourself: thank you Germany, you stop me from dreaming. Mask requirement for the octopus and relaxed Piccachu with the Corona youth.

And true postcard art from the Alps.

Yes, that's "art funded by the state of Hesse"! (Papa Takata album / funding of the gallery panremis.de project:

HKST - Hessian Cultural Foundation).

The works have been created in the context of a rapidly changing reality, from the state of the 'encompassing, total undecided' at the beginning of the pandemic to the current great war over fossil fuels.

At a time when society's scope for action is shrinking more and more under the exponentially growing climate catastrophe.

Suicidal old power politics, unscrupulous autocrats, neoliberal mismanagement and the widespread misconception that everything has nothing to do with politics, everything doesn't matter because everyone is the same, "everything pigs, except mom", kill people and the environment.

As a curator and exhibitor, as well as when asking artists about exhibitions at panremis.de, I have tried to avoid repetitions in terms of content and form.

Therefore, right at the beginning of the exhibition cycle, the duration was set at about twelve months - it has become 15.

In terms of content, apart from the utopian orientation, I didn't want to make any specifications for the art, because utopia* can be many things, both large and small.

The project, funded by the HKST, developed as an ongoing social process - the gallery as a growing social sculpture in the Beuysian sense, modeled by the personality and works of the exhibitors and the zoom discourses of the audience.

At the beginning of 2021 I had to change my concept.

In view of the worsening infection situation, there were hardly any vaccines, I gave up the idea of an analogue gallery with changing exhibitions in off-places and was able to convince the HKST of the digital version, panremis.de.

In retrospect, a logical twist - the online gallery is a double "non-place*" in terms of the topic.

The concept of the gallery as an online time capsule for the general public to look up later was also created by the artists and their diverse exhibits on the subject in the course of the monthly exhibitions.

On Sunday, October 9th, 2022 the finissage of the gallery and the opening of the real-time machine 2042 panremis.de took place via zoom. A printed catalog is in progress for documentation.

* https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utopie:

«A utopia is the design of a possible, future, but mostly fictitious way of life or social order that is not tied to contemporary historical-cultural framework conditions. The term is derived from the ancient Greek οὐ ou ‹not› and τόπος tópos ‹place, place›, put together ‹non-place› (...)

The term comes from the title ‹De optimo rei publicae statu deque nova insula Utopia› (The best state of the state or the new island of Utopia) of the 1516 novel by the English statesman Thomas More, who describes an ideal society with the help of which he holds up a critical mirror to his contemporaries."
